Incident report: Network outage morning of 21 June 2025

In the early morning of 21 June 2025, users began notifiying the Nym team on community channels about NymVPN connections failures across all apps and OS. The Nym team quickly identified the network API problem and got the network up and running. Connection for all apps is now confirmed to be restored.

🕒 Timeline of events

• Approximately 2:30 UTC: Users begin reporting connection issues via Telegram
• 7:50 UTC: Nym community managers first made aware of network problem
• 8:00 UTC Notifications made on website, community channels, and socials
• 8:38 UTC: Service recovery confirmed

🔍 Root cause

• A problem with the Nym API resulted in gateways not appearing as available for clients
• As a result, NymVPN clients could not establish connection

🛠️ Resolution & mitigation

In order to determine geographical location of the nodes & gateways, NymVPN relies on an IP geolocation service. The service plan Nym has been using recently underwent a change of conditions. After investigation, there was an unclear change of conditions on rate limits which unknowingly affected our plan (which was understood to be without rate limits).

As a result of this change on the service provider's side, a rate limit was newly imposed, causing the unavailability of all gateways for NymVPN clients.

The plan and rate limit problem has been resolved with the service provider.
