Voting for the third Nym Improvement Proposal (NIP) is now underway. This will determine whether Nym’s exit policy for exit gateways will change to allow connections with ports needed to access Monero chain services and DarkFi.

What is a NIP?

Nym Improvement Proposals (NIPs) are a new Nym initiative in decentralized governance. They allow important changes to node operations to be approved by the community of operators themselves. Voting is thus an essential part in realizing this vision of decentralization.

The third NIP is now underway, so let’s hear what you think should happen!

NIP-3 in brief

NIP-3 proposes to open five ports for NymVPN exit nodes to allow people to access Monero and DarkFi services. These ports are currently unavailable according to the current NymVPN exit policy, which was designed to protect node operators.

What are these ports?

Monero ports

At Nym, we’re big fans of Monero, privacy coins, and tech working to make crypto private by default. The Monero daemon uses three ports (18080, 18081, and 18089) to communicate with the blockchain in order to synchronize and announce transactions. Opening these ports on the Nym exit policy will thus allow people to use NymVPN for Monero transactions for unbeatable privacy in their crypto transactions.

DarkFi ports

DarkFi is a base layer for anonymous applications and smart contracts that aims to be multi-chain interoperable. Ports 25551 and 26661 are used to communicate with DarkFi nodes via Tor or clearnet respectively. Opening these ports will increase the interoperability of NymVPN protections with other privacy apps and networks.

How to vote

Vote on NIP-3 now

Voting is currently underway via the Nym Governator. You can vote according to four options:

What happens after the vote

Following the vote according to the above options, the respective ports will be immediately opened or remain closed.

If opened, these changes will be made for the exit policies of both the Anonymous (mixnet) and Fast (WireGuard) modes of NymVPN. And that’s that!
