What is a “chain”?
Chain is short for blockchain. The Nym network has a blockchain component (Nyx) that serves three main purposes:
- It maintains the list of servers that route your traffic (the “topology” of the network);
- It processes NYM token transactions (including bonding and staking in the network);
- It issues zk-nyms, the privacy preserving “tickets” that allow you to use the network via your NymVPN app
What is a chain upgrade?
A blockchain is a decentralized ledger that is maintained by independent operators (called “Validators”) across the world.
When the chain needs upgrading (as all software does from time to time), these validators vote on the upgrade and a “block height” is set, determining when the upgrade will happen.
The Nyx blockchain that services the Nym network now needs an upgrade. The vote was passed last week and block height for the upgrade was set to 16868000 which is likely to land today, 19 February 2025, around 13:57 UTC (13:57:44.
How will it affect me?
Ideally, it won’t! The network should upgrade very quickly with no impact on our users. However, sometimes the chain can “halt” during an upgrade.
A potential “chain halt” would affect all Nym services, including the NymVPN. This is because blockchain validators are responsible for the issuance and redeeming of zk-nyms, as well as the staking and bonding of NYM tokens.
In the event of a chain halt, the Nym core team will work closely with validators to restart the chain and ensure rapid return to normal services.
How will I know the status of the upgrade?
