Nym token economics: quarterly parameter update

It’s that time again, folks: the mixnet token economic parameters are being updated to take into account the recent vest.

The vest means there are now more NYM tokens in circulation, thereby increasing the total available staking supply. This requires a new target staking supply and, of particular interest to stakers and mix node operators, this means the stake saturation point increases to 929k NYM.

For those wondering what lies behind these numbers and why the parameters change, here is a little recap:

Why do Nym token economic parameters change?

With every new vest, a tranche of tokens are released and become part of the circulating supply. This means the tokens that are available to be staked on mix nodes increase, changing the token economic parameters.

With the latest vest, the total circulating supply has increased to 394 million and the locked tokens that are available to be staked are 52 million. This gives a total of 446million that in theory could be staked.

Taking into account current levels of staking, we set the target to 50% of the available staking supply of 446 million NYM, leading to a current target staking supply of 223million. The target staking supply determines the mix node stake saturation point.

Mix nodes have a stake saturation point, which is the amount of stake that maximises the node’s rewards. This parameter is found by dividing the target staking supply by the number of rewarded nodes per epoch (currently 240 nodes).

With these new parameters, the APY of well-performing nodes with high levels of staking is slightly above 20%.

The next update to this parameter will take place in June after the next quarterly vest.
