Onion encryption

Onion encryption is another name for multi-layered encryption and was coined in relation to Tor's encypted routing procedure. With onion encryption, data packets are encrypted multiple times in layers like an onion. Each layer of encryption corresponds with a node on the multi-hop network that alone possesses the decryption key. This prevents proxy servers from accessing the contents or full route of traffic for the data they handle.
