Decentralization is the process or structure in which control, decision-making, and data are distributed across multiple independent actors, rather than being held by a single central authority. In digital systems, decentralization aims to eliminate single points of control or failure, enabling networks to operate more autonomously and securely. It stands in contrast to centralized models, where one organization or server manages the entire system.

Decentralization: FAQs

Decentralization can be physical (distributed nodes), governance (community voting via DAO), and permissionless. Nym combines all three—anyone can run a mix node or vote on protocol upgrades—reducing single-point control.

Redundancy ensures that if some nodes go offline, traffic can be routed through others without disruption—maintaining uptime and resilience even under network failure.

Decentralization increases resilience and transparency, but may introduce coordination challenges, latency variability, and governance complexities compared to centralized setups.

Nym maintains open-source code, publicly audited deployments, and an on-chain reputation and staking model—ensuring that node identities, behavior, and protocol governance are visible and verifiable.

Nym employs hourly re-shuffling of mixnode layers and stake-weighted reputation scoring to avoid concentration of routing power and maintain distributed node assignment.
