Use the Firo Element wallet over NymConnect to enjoy strong privacy for your transactions

Firo (formerly Zcoin) is a privacy-focused, zk-proofs-based cryptocurency. Now you can enjoy Firo over the Nym mixnet to protect not just your transaction data, but also its metadata — namely your patterns of transactions.

The Nym mixnet mixes all kinds of internet traffic together to enable general purpose privacy as the default online. This ensures security and integrity, so that online activity is not vulnerable to exploits, hacks and surveillance.

Firo’s fork of the Electrum wallet has just been integrated to work over the Nym mixnet. And by using the NymConnect app, you can do it all via a simple interface without the need for advanced technical skills!

Here’s how to do it…

How can I use Firo over the Nym Mixnet?

The NymConnect application is for everyone. It is an easy to use interface so ordinary people don’t have to struggle to install and run the nym-socks5-client themselves.

NymConnect is plug-and-play. The app is already integrated with Telegram, Electrum Bitcoin wallet, Monero wallet (desktop and CLI) and Matrix (Element app), enabling these apps to automatically run your traffic through the mixnet, protecting it from any prying eyes.

To use Firo over NymConnect, here’s what you need to do:

1. Download NymConnect.

2. If you are not on Linux skip to the next step. Otherwise, make executable by opening the terminal in the same directory and run:

chmod +x ./nym-connect_1.1.*

This will make executable any NymConnect above version 1.1 in that directory.

3. Download Firo Electrum wallet from Firo’s repository or the Github release page. To connect to the mixnet, follow these steps:

4. Start and connect NymConnect (or nym-socks5-client).

5. Start your Firo Electrum wallet, then navigate to: Tools -> Network -> Proxy

6. Set Use proxy to ✅, and choose SOCKS5 from the drop-down menu.

7. Go to NymConnect to copy your IP and Port values.

8. Go back to Firo and add the values from your NymConnect application.

Your Firo Electrum wallet now runs through the mixnet! This also means it will be connected and online only when your NymConnect or nym-socks5-client are connected. So remember to switch on NymConnect when you need to use your wallet!

In case you have problems such as Gateway connection drop-outs, try to reconnect or restart the application.

This guide alongside other user manuals can be found at the Nym Developer Portal.
